Ground Assessment Services 

Many sportsgrounds have deteriorated due to recent drought conditions & associated water restrictions. Grounds can also become excessively boggy in winter due to poor soil type and inadequate drainage. Hard or soft grounds & poor surface conditions may lead to an increased risk of injuries.

 

SportsTurf Consultants have conducted over 4,000 ground safety audits for councils & schools over the last few years.

 

The independent assessment of sports grounds has several benefits.

 

Management tool

  • Highlights potential issues so that remedial action can be taken to minimise ground closures because it is unsafe.

  • Allows monitoring of ground condition to determine whether it is deteriorating or remaining constant.

  • Allows early ‘minor’ works to be undertaken, thus avoiding expensive, major works. 

Pro-active risk management strategy

  • By having a system of regular ground inspections in place will help reduce Council’s insurance premium.

  • If there is a claim you need to be able to demonstrate that you have good maintenance schedules & regular ground monitoring in place (ie. a paper trail)

Goodwill with sporting groups

  • Council is seen to be looking after sporting groups by having processes in place to minimise ground closures and disruptions to sporting fixtures and training.

Conducting independent ground safety audits

  • Measurement of surface hardness using the Clegg Impact Hammer

  • Visual assessment of the playing surface condition including grass cover, surface evenness, stability, presence of cracks & holes, damage due to machinery etc.

  • Comprehensive report that highlights grounds that have high injury potential and require remedial action

 Development of internal ground assessment procedures

  • Working with Councils existing procedures and resources, a comprehensive ground assessment package can be developed for use by operators (mowing crew), supervisors and sporting groups.

  • The package developed is designed to meet Council’s requirements, be easy to use, provide useful management information and be an important part of a proactive risk management strategy.
